Canon Rebel T1i Test: Moonlight
Taken with Canon Rebel T1i (aka 500D or Kiss X3) and roughly edited in Apple iMovie. Problem is that manual exposure is not supported in the video mode by the current T1i firmware. 5D Mark II now supports this by the latest update. Now the 5D is light years ahead of T1i in terms of video capability. I was playing the piano while my sister’s dog, Bikke, was peeing on the carpet just next to the pianos. Piano: Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II, moon: Canon EF 300mm f/4L IS USM. 1920×1080 at 20 fps.

whoa! this is worth to get. The moon looks amazing!
@ashleybrown013 Not for this video. But I use the lens occasionally when shooting a video because it’s quiet and its stabilizer is not too optimized for still photos.
did you use the lense it came with?
@ytsutano Ok thanks!
@CADETINATORT1000 Yes, it can shoot 1080i, but at 20fps which is very slow. T2i can go up to 30fps with 1080i, so get T2i instead of T1i if “full HD” recording is important.
So this camera does take full HD video?
Wow, this makes me wonder why do we live in a planet with a moon in a galaxy.
I mean, the meaning of life.
Nice camera by the way.
Beautiful footage.
I’ll buy it someday.
you can zoom even with the kitlens. its just hard to keep the camera steady and zoom at the same time.
Does anyone know if you can get a lense that lets you zoom while recording for SLR’s that shoot HD video??
Thanks, Do you think a 400mm lense would make it that big without editing?
Yes, but cropped in Photoshop from the RAW image.
There’s no way to crop the video part since the images are resampled by the camera to very small size (1080p or 720p). T2i solves this problem by supporting video cropping.
So that last picture was taken with just the 300mm lens?
the moon light video is amazing! i really want to get a t1i!!
I wish I had manual exposure and cropping when shooting this video. With T2i, the moon on the video will look as nice as the still photo.
“After all, these are just test videos”
Yes, and a good video, too. I just really like Zeppelin.
You are right. But the same person taken by same camera. After all, these are just test videos with Canon Rebel T1i
OK, minor point here, but I’m pretty sure that wasn’t Led Zeppelin.
I bought my T1i last week… shame
GODDAMN CANON!! Releasing T2i without updating the firmware for the T1i!!!!!
Now there’s no hope for ever getting an upgrade!!!!
@magermax000 I have a macbook pro. i use the flash card to transfer files. does it in about 1 min. then i edit in FCE or imovie.
This is a really well done video. Have you heard that there might be a new Rebel announced next week? The rumor is that it will have selectable fps. But there are other problems with video from the T1i- like the crappy audio and no external mic. I hope they fix that as well. If Canon does not improve the video capabilities of the next rebel I’ll probably look at the micro four thirds cameras.
Yes, it’s worth it (at least for me). If you are a pro, you should go get 5D Mark II or 7D; otherwise, T1i is the way to go.
Just keep in mind that the camera is heavier than traditional camcorders, does not have autofocus, and has limited battery life per charge, etc.
I just have one more question, sorry. Is this camera worth buying for like movie usage? I understood that the picture quality is outstanding but in both video and picture! thanks!!
Taking a video using T1i is more like filming as opposed to taping. The DSLR’s picture quality is a lot better than the others especially with the wide selection of the lens. However, there are some weakness such as poor sound, no practical autofocusing, less battery time, no view finder, etc.
Final Cut Pro is a perfect editing tool for the camera. So go get T1i if you want the picture quality. If you don’t like the weakness of the camera, then you should look for more conventional cameras.
Hey! What’s up, I am trying to find a great HD video camera that can help me! I edit in FCP and I would like to know if you recommend me this camera or not, please tell me, I saved up money! : ) Thank you, btw video is amazing!
