Too funny… If you want a camera to make her jealous take a good look at the Sony A550. It’s got a lot of things that might make her jealous.
1) Very crisp 921,000 dot, 3 inch LCD that tilt’s up 90 degree’s and down 45 degree’s.
2) Internal HDR (high dynamic range). Basically takes two shots right after each other at two exposuer settings and blends them together into one image with a very wide dynamic range. Meaning detail in both lighted and shadowed areas.
3) Best live view shooting of any dSLR on the market. Yes better than $5,000 Canon and Nikons. If you want me to explain why msg me via my profile.
4) Extremely fast shutter for the money. 5fsp normal and 7fps in speed priority mode. You can’t get another camera to reach 7fps without spending 3x as much (namely the Canon 7D). This camera is a machine gun.
5) Amazingly accurate and fast auto focus. A friend of mine shot seagulls recently and I kid you not every single shot was razor sharp accurate focus. And I mean in flight… I have the Sony A330 which came out only months before the 500/550 around the same price range and I’m jealous of the AF speed and accuracy improvements.
6) Some really neat features usually only found in instant cameras like face detect (recognizes a human face and tracks it to keep it in focus) and yes this works… and smile shutter. Set your camera up and set it to smile shutter and anyone who walks buy the camera will focus on their face and snap a shot when they smile. Great for setting up self portraits or group shots without having to time the beeps. No other high end DSLR has these features.
7) Internal image stabilization. Your g/f’s Canon has to have each and every lens with IS… I think the Pentax you mentioned has this… but IMO no T1i user is going to be envious of the Pentax… LOL
BTW… if your thinking the A550/500 is starting to sound too complicated for a beginner… its not… they are IMO the absolute best DSLR’s right now for first time users. They have very easy to navigate menus with pop up tips that you can shut off later as you learn your camera.
FYI if you really want movie mode then disregard what I just said. No movie mode in the Sony’s. But that being said… movie mode in a DSLR is just a gimmick to any serious shooter. One thing that most people don’t know and sales people don’t tell them or don’t know themselves… is none of the DSLR’s with movie mode have continuous auto focus. ie. you have to turn the focus ring… or hit a button for a one time AF… then hit it again if your subject moves again. ie. any moving target and they will be going in and out of focus as you struggle to keep up.
Other cameras in the range to consider are the Nikon D5000 or the Sony A500. The little brother of the A550. Lower res on the LCD, 3fps.
You could buy a Nikon D90, its in the same line as the Canon Rebel T1i.
But you can make a canon user jealous you should buy(In order):
canon 50D, canon 7D
Nikon d300s
I think the above camera could make them jealous: but if you really want you for them to bleed due to jealousy you could either buy the camera below.
Canon 1D Mark IV
Nikon d700
or you just want to be a really really bad person. buy this
Leica S2 (cost $21k for body only(without the lens))
Its not all about the body, its what you put on it. Get a rebel, but get a better lens.
Go for a 50mm f1.8 and buy the body only.
Get a flashgun.
These will make you the envy of your girlfriend, but you know what, they can also strengthen your love. Your gf can lend you her lens when you need it and vice versa? Why buy into two systems when as one you can acheive so much more? Why buy like for like when you can compliment each other?
There’s no ‘i’ in team. Expand your overall range and your love will blossom. Love isn’t a competition. And importantly, you’ll take better pictures with a bigger kit thats compatable and shared.
I think the Pentax is looking impressive. I am thinking about getting one as an 2nd camera. I really like its high ISO performance and that can take older k-mount lenses. I listed some links below that provides various information. The 4th link below is the Pentax against a high end Canon 7D (about $1700 just for the camera body) and it more than holds its own in the ISO comparisons.
Hope this helps.

Recommend Nikon D5000.
My wife loves this camera. I have taken photography classes and my wife just wanted something with a faster frame rate, our toddler does not pose for us. This camera is amazing, so much it can do if you want it too and so much it can just do for you. My wife does not have the time to learn about all the things one can really do with this camera, but that’s fine, since the auto and scene settings seem to do a pretty stellar job anyway. But for me, having the manual modes and ability to tinker, just like on my old analog SLR, is fantastic. Seriously. For those who always wanted a dark room in their own house, but can’t afford the chemicals and supplies, getting a mid entry-level DSLR like the Nikon d5000 is the next best thing. An instant digital darkroom is at your disposal once you transfer the pictures over to your computer. But with a DSLR,you can really fine tune your image before you even take a picture, not just in Photoshop. I love being able to adjust the depth of field, white balance, film speed etc. It really makes even digital photography, something that is becoming less and less blasphemous to the photo purists thanks to great cameras like the D5000, a much more creative venture.
Yes, the rear LCD display is a smidge smaller than other models and hard to see in sunlight, but same is true of the larger screens with better resolution in the sunlight. I like the ability to turn it around and protect the screen. When your done with your day of shooting, just use the LCD indoors to delete the blurries etc, before you transfer to your computer. You really would have to do the same with any other DSLR when shooting outdoors anyway. The price is great and you essentially get the technology from the higher-end D90 in a slightly smaller and more economical package. Save your money for another lens, like a wide angle, which is on my wishlist now for sure. In conclusion: A high quality DSLR camera for a budget-minded family with users of different abilities and interests. Nice work Nikon!
# 12.3-megapixel DX-format CMOS image sensor
# Outfit includes the 3x AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR lens with image stabilization
# D-Movie Mode with sound; record 720p HD movie clips
# Vari-angle color 2.7-inch LCD monitor; one-button Live View
# Capture images to SD/SDHC memory cards
I think you should let your pictures speak for themselves (otherwise, you might look like a poser).
Nikon D5000 is in many ways so similar in specification that there is little difference between the two cameras.
However there are a number of better cameras on the market than the T1i/500D. The Canon xxD series of cameras are all regarded as higher performance products. The 50D and 40D are built more strongly and have a more professional feel to them.
