I’m looking into getting my first DSLR, and I’m trying to decide whether or not its worth paying the extra $100 or so for the T1i. I’m on an extremely low budget here, but I do want a camera that will last me a while.

I’d wait for the T1i. The extra ISO rating (lower light performance) and the video capability and being 18 months newer in technology could be worth the extra $100 or so.
The XSi is canon 450D while the T1I is canon 500D. They are the same digital rebel line, but the T1I is the newer model. As far as upgrades in the product line goes, going from XSi to T1i was one of the bigger jumps (the t1i just inherited the sensor from the midlevel canon 50D)
- The VGA lcd screen is a huge improvement.
- Video is the first ever on an entry line DSLR. (video on dslr is different from camcorders in that its less convenient but you can do video that is very professional looking)
- Higher ISO, this is extremely important, with the T1i you can take photos without flash in a dark movie theatre (12800 iso) while XSi only has 1600
- Creative Auto Mode, this is nice for total beginners so you don’t have to use aperture and shutter speed, instead u move a slider for background blur or sharp in a more understandable way. (of course useless for people who are more advanced)
So personally I would recommend getting the t1i over the XSi if the price difference is within about $100
