The G10 is an excellent camera, but still can't compete with a DSLR in terms of picture quality, especially in low light situations (such as birthday parties.) They also focus faster and have very little shutter lag, so when your kid is active you will be able to take better pictures of those moments.

The drawback, of course, is that any DSLR is much bigger than the G10, and it can be a pain in the neck to lug everywhere you think you might need it.

It might be better to have a slightly worse camera with you than to have a better camera sitting on the shelf at home...

If you want beautiful vibrant clear photos, get a DSLR. The Canon EOS T1i is 15 megapixel. That is slightly more than the G10.

The image quality of even the cheapest DSLR will be far greater than even the best point and shoot cause DSLR's have much better optics, much larger sensors, better faster processors. The sensors on most DSLR's are nearly 15 times larger than the sensors on point and shoot cameras. Therefore the pixels are 15 times larger
Highly recommend Canon T1i
