Even on sports mode pictures have that smeared effect. The T1i is also referred as the Canon EOS 500D. I’m using the efs 18-55mm lens.
I’m shooting pictures of people bboying(breakdancing).

what are you shooting?
500th of a second shutter speed will freeze most things using ambient light
flash freezes most things but bullets
so use flash or use 500th shutter or faster
When taking pictures of a moving subject its all about your shutter speed. You need to stop depending on the camera to make the right decisions and learn to use it in Shutter Priority AE (TV, which means Time Value). On a bright sunny day you might try ISO 200 and set your shutter speed at 1/500 sec. The camera will then select a correct f-stop.
Now if you’re trying to shoot action pictures indoors its going to require a much higher ISO since the 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 zoom you have is a very slow lens. You’ll still use Shutter Priority but your ISO is going to be 1600 or higher. The camera will tell you if there is insufficient light at 1/500 sec. and ISO 1600. You’d then have to choose between ISO 3200 or a slower shutter speed like 1/250 sec. Depending on the lighting conditions you may have to use both adjustments – slower shutter speed and higher ISO.
These books would really help you: ‘Understanding Exposure’ and ‘Understanding Shutter Speed’, both by Bryan Peterson.
It will also help if you’ll READ & STUDY the Owner’s Manual for your camera.
Make sure the Correct Settings Are on And Try to get it Stabilized as best as you can and than shoot
