What are the best lenses for a Canon T1i?

Question by jenna: What are the best lenses for a Canon T1i?
I recently got a T1i as a gift and was wondering what types of lenses I should invest in. I’m planning on doing all sorts of photography so I need lenses that would work best for one or two things, and others that have more of a variety of uses. My photo teacher said that I should look into off brand lenses so anywhere to buy or any brand/company that makes good ones would be useful!

Oh, and if you could try and give me some ideas of less expensive lenses that would be extremely helpful as well!

Other than your kit lens (18-55mm?) I think the best lens investment you can make at this early stage is the Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II

This lens doesn’t zoom. It’s a prime lens. http://blog.epicedits.com/2008/02/13/7-reasons-to-love-prime-lenses/

Due to it’s f/1.8 aperture (the best your kit lens can do is f/5.6 at 55mm). It will allow you to shoot in situations your kit lens just won’t allow, such as indoors in low light (no flash). It will allow you to experiment with a very shallow depth of field and bokeh, so is perfect for portraits.

The only real bad thing about it, is it’s plastic construction (including plastic lens mount) and no USM.

The great thing about it is it’s very sharp image quality…and at around US0 it’s an absolute bargain. Most photographers would recommend this lens.

A better choice (mostly in build quality) would be the Canon 50mm f/1.4 USM. It has the addition of an Ultrasonic Motor (USM) for fast, quiet AF and Full time Manual focusing. It costs approx. US0 http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Canon-EF-50mm-f-1.4-USM-Lens-Review.aspx

Third party (off brands) can be a good choice if you pick the right one. But, I recommend you stick to quality Canon lenses if you can…

Hey,

For low light, I recommend Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 – 110$

However, what’s your budget, you want a zoom etc..

Here’s a post called ‘Buying a Lens for Canon (7 subgroups) – http://www.the-dslr-photographer.com/2009/11/buying-lens.html

Good luck! The site has many more tutorials, tips, reviews and guides!
